Character Descriptions

MILLY:  A strong singer with a solid range, Milly, is both sweet and spunky. Must move well in the dance numbers. Her sense of humor and charismatic presence must be evident from the moment we first meet her.  I’m looking for a lot of “sparkle.”  She is naïve when it comes to love and could be considered “wholesome” rather than sexually alluring.  She must command the stage at all times.  Age can be as young as 25 and as old as 30ish.

ADAM:  A mountain man in the “Grizzly Adams” mold, a dreamy, macho baritone who can command the stage along with Milly.  Neanderthal in his ways of looking at the world, his values are solid and he takes his responsibilities seriously.  When on a mission he takes the shortest route to what he wants, even if it wreaks havoc around him.  Sexy, without trying!

THE BRIDES: Of various ages, the ladies of the town are bored with the same old town boys and their proper ways of courting. They long for excitement as they dream of something more.  All must have good strong character voices, and dance well.  I am looking for individual character traits that make each of them unique, humorous, loveable.

ALICE is the youngest and most impressionable. DORCUS is the possible “slut” if there were to be one

in the show.  The others can have any kind of traits that stand out (bossy, worrier, cry baby, etc). The brides must not over act.  Staying emotionally honest but still maintaining a high energy level (I hated some of their movie scenes) will be key.

THE BROTHERS: Gideon, the youngest must be able to sing well and be extra capable of dazzling dance tricks.  All of the brothers are loud (but in tune) singers and high energy dancers. They are hot headed and naïve in the ways of the world. Like overgrown puppies, they love a good fight, a tasty meal and the newly discovered joy of dancing with a girl! The brothers DO NOT show off or mug for the audience! They should be on a dramatic mission to win their girl, doing whatever it takes.

TOWN SUITORS: These guys should dance and sing macho but be a bit “stuffy” or “proper” as characters.  Think of bankers, lawyers, teachers, store managers, “Fussy” might be another way to describe them.  Stay away from “boring” as there will be a tendency to fade out of the scene. These men are just as passionate in their own way as the brothers.  They simply restrict their behavior to a strict code of decorum which the brothers do not. They must match the brothers in energy and commitment or the show doesn’t work.

TOWN FOLK: These are the brides’ parents, neighbors, siblings and friends.  Mr. and Mrs. Bixby, Dorcus’ parents run the general store.  They remind me of The Olson’s on the TV show, “Little House on the Prairie.”  Mr. Perkins runs the boarding house/restaurant with astern hand.  The preacher is a kind man who loves his flock.  All the others are of all ages and occupations.
